County gears up for Halloween

Festive events planned around county

DAVENPORT —Halloween is coming up Tuesday, Oct. 31, and organizations around Lincoln County are ready to celebrate with candies, costumes, carnivals and other popular activities for children and adults alike to enjoy.

Here’s a breakdown of everything Halloween-related going on around Lincoln County.

Reardan

This weekend, ghosts and goblins will provide a blood curdling experience to all who dare visit the Haunted Train at the Inland Northwest Rail Museum. The event will be Saturday, Oct 28, from 6 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Halloween night, Oct. 31, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Reardan-Edwall School District students will decorate the train cars and pose as ghoulish characters intent on giving visitors a nail-biting adventure.

“This is one of our best events,” museum president Dale Swant said. “It always amazes me how many kids enjoy being scared.”

Swant said last year over 300 people, mostly in costume, attended the event which is appropriate for all ages.

The event is free for children 4 and under. Admission for children 5 to 13 is $6 (in costume $5), adults are $12 (in costume $10) and seniors and military members are $10. Tickets will be available at the door.

Treats, hot chocolate and coffee will be available at no charge.

The train museum’s phone number is 509-796-3377. It is at the junction of U.S. Highway 2 and State Highway 231.

Meanwhile, the town Police Department will be handing out candy Halloween night between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Harrington

The Chamber of Commerce is hosting “Halloween Fun in Harrington” from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28.

Third Street will be closed from Lynden Street to Sherlock Street, and local businesses will be open for food, drinks, shopping and candy giveaways. Businesses, clubs and organizations will set up tables with various Halloween activities for attendees to enjoy.

“We’ll have lots of candy, lots of treats,” Chamber President Paula Harrington said. “The grade school band teacher will have the kids out singing. We’re going to set up a photo booth beside the old City Hall.”

Business owners and employees are encouraged to dress in costume, as are attendees.

And at the school, elementary schoolers will parade through the high school Tuesday, Oct. 31. Teachers will be handing out candy to the youngsters, as is Harrington School tradition, office manager Kelli Tanke said.

Odessa

The Odessa High School FFA Chapter and Chamber of Commerce are hosting a carnival at the community center Tuesday, Oct. 31.

The proceedings begin with “Boo a Business’’ from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Children, in costume, will walk downtown, looking for businesses with a pumpkin in the window.

Businesses will provide a stamp and candy, and completion of the scavenger hunt will result in prizes.

The FFA-run carnival will be at the community center from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Some activities include a cake walk, skee ball and darts. Burgers, hot dogs, drinks and chips will be served.

Halloween night in Odessa doesn’t end there, as Christ Lutheran Church is hosting its First Annual Trunk or Treat from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the church parking lot, where vehicles will be parked and decorated with Halloween-themed trunks.

Davenport

Elementary schoolers will participate in a costume parade around the high school track from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, weather permitting.
