Gorillas' season ends with tourney loss

Davenport drops final two matches

COLBERT - Davenport needed to win one of its two volleyball matches in the District 7 2B Volleyball Tournament on Thursday, Oct 26, to advance to the District 6/7 Crossover Tournament.

The Gorillas lost both matches to Northwest Christian and Jenkins (Chewelah). The losses eliminated Davenport from postseason play and ended its season.

Davenport's pairing with NWC was a rematch of a match played Oct. 19, which the Crusaders won 3-2.

In this meeting the Gorillas played hard, but the result was the same. NWC proved to be four points better in each set, winning 25-21, 25-21, 25-21.

The Gorillas' loss sent them to a loser-out game against Chewelah.

After being behind 16-6 in the first set of that match, Davenport closed the gap to 17-15. The teams matched each other point-for-point down the stretch before Chewelah scored the final two points to secure the 26-24 victory.

Chewelah won the second set 25-19.

In the third set, the Gorillas reeled off nine straight points to take a 12-6 lead behind the serving of Chloe Hammond. They won their first set of the day 26-24.

Davenport took an early lead in the fourth set, leading 18-14. Chewelah tied the game at 21 and went on to win 25-22 to take the match 3-1.

"The last two weeks have been extremely challenging with our injuries and illness," Davenport head coach Natalee Hayes said. "I am so proud of what they did tonight as they literally fought to the very end. I couldn't be more proud of what they have accomplished and what they've done together as a team this season."

In their two matches, Naomi Rainwater notched 34 kills, Selah Hupp had 57 digs and Koda Coffman and Astraya Sosa had 19 and 13 assists, respectively.

Clare Lathrop had five blocks and Hammond recorded five serving aces.

The Gorillas ended the season with a 6-10 record.

Northwest Christian and Chewelah both advanced to the District 6/7 Crossover Tournament Nov. 4.
