Reardan to run single EP&O levy

REARDAN — The school district currently has one levy that is expiring at the end of 2024. Therefore, the district hopes its voters will approve a replacement levy in a special Feb. 2024 election.

The levy, which will be an educational programs and operations levy, would run for three years and be valued at approximately $2 per $1,000 assessed property value.

A homeowner with a property value of $300,000 would be asked to contribute about $600 per year as part of the levy.

Educational programs and operations levies fund extracurricular and district activities not covered by the state, including athletics, clubs, some teachers, some transportation and other needs.

The levy would collect $1,918,071 in 2025, $2,013,974 in 2026 and $2,114,673 in 2027. The school district is collecting about $1.4 million on the current levy, also valued at approximately $2 per $1,000 assessed property value, in 2024.

The current, expiring 3-year levy passed by a 54.26% to 45.74% margin in Feb. 2021, mostly due to its overwhelming support in Lincoln County.

Lincoln County voters within the school district voted for the levy by a 66.67% clip, but Spokane County voters in the district were opposed 53.46% to 46.54%. The margin in Lincoln County was still enough to pass the levy through.

The school district wasn’t so lucky in its attempts for a capital projects levy for facilities improvements in Nov. 2022, which voters opposed 58.72% to 41.28% due to a largely opposed voter base in Spokane County. Lincoln County voters were narrowly in favor of the levy 51.2% to 48.8%, but Spokane County voters were opposed 64.71% to 35.29%.
