Car chase ends in field near Davenport

Two Mansfield men arrested, booked

DAVENPORT — A Mansfield father and son were arrested and remained in Lincoln County Jail after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen 1975 Dodge Power Wagon through city limits and into a wheat field east of the city Wednesday, Nov. 29.

Joseph Lee Cooper Senior, 41, of Mansfield, was booked into the jail on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and attempting to elude police.

Joseph Lee Cooper Junior, 22, Mansfield, was booked on a charge of attempting to elude police, according to police records.

According to police records, dispatch was informed of a stolen vehicle heading eastbound on U.S. Highway 2 near Almira. Deputy Kurt Cuzzetto got behind the vehicle at milepost 247 west of Davenport, records state.

Cooper Sr., the driver, turned off the highway onto Mountain View Cemetery Road before turning north onto 12th Street.

He then sped down Morgan Street at 65 miles per hour, records state.

The chase continued onto northbound Oehlwein Road east of the city before driving into a field south of Old Sunset Highway. Cooper Sr. managed to continue east, eluding police through fog before Cuzzetto re-located the dodging Dodge northbound on Jannett Road toward the highway, records state.

The Coopers were finally detained north of U.S. Highway 2 just east of Jannett Road, records state.

Both men appeared before Lincoln County District Court Judge Dan B. Johnson and ordered to remain in Jail until they posted bail, District Court staff said.

Records state the elder Cooper was given $30,000 bail and the younger $5,000.
