Collection amount to remain same
HARRINGTON—The local school district will be asking its taxpayers to replace the current levy with a new 2-year levy in a special election Feb. 13. The levy will collect the same amount as the current levy.
The levy would collect $375,000 in 2025 and 2026.
“Even though costs are going up, we thought it’d be in the best interest of the community to keep the amount the same,” superintendent Howard King said.
Because property values increased in the Harrington area this year, the collection rate per taxpayer should slightly decrease, King said.
The projected collection amount is $2.13 per $1,000 assessed property value, a drop from the current rate of $2.20 per $1,000 assessed property value.
A homeowner with a property valued at $300,000 would contribute about $639 to the levy annually.
“Levies are necessary for the district to pay for things the state wouldn’t,” King said.
Such items include, but aren’t limited to, some teaching positions, athletics, extracurricular activities and some transportation.
