Reardan boys upset NWC

ScrEagles then thrashed at Brewster

REARDAN - Last weekend, the Screaming Eagles' boys basketball team got two big wins over Chewelah and Northwest Christian. Tuesday night, the fun was interrupted with an 85-50 shellacking at the hands of Brewster.

The 2-1 week brought Reardan's season record to 3-4 as the non-conference season draws nearer to an end.

Reardan started off with a 19-14 lead against Chewelah before building that lead to 32-21 behind 17 points from Rysen Soliday Friday, Dec. 15. Soliday would finish with 29 points in Reardan's 66-45 victory.

It was then upset time for the Screaming Eagles a day later against the Crusaders. NWC started off with an 11-8 lead as Reardan tried to solve a 2-3 zone defense.

And figure it out, Reardan did. The Screaming Eagles scored 29 second quarter points capped by a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Zander Thornton to take a 37-32 halftime lead.

That lead slightly grew to 51-45 after three quarters but was trimmed to 55-52 as both teams went cold from the field.

"I'm going to have to give the credit to our defense, because our mentality is that if our shots aren't falling, then you get back on defense and keep coming at them," Soliday said.

NWC cut the lead to 55-54, but a big corner three from Maveric Sobotta gave Reardan a 58-54 lead with 28 seconds left. Reardan hit six free throws down the stretch for a 64-58 victory.

"We practice these shots every single day in practice, and if we miss them, we're running for them so by now, five-six weeks in, we've gotten pretty good at them," Soliday said.

Soliday finished with 23 points, while Justin Vaughn scored 15 points off the bench. Sobotta had 13 points and Thornton 11 points for Reardan.

"What's hard about losing with this group is that they work so hard," Reardan head coach Jake Green said. "They weren't getting that gratification for themselves of winning...to have these kids that work that hard, this win feels good for them and this will also hopefully keep us disciplined and pick up their spirits a little bit more."

Reardan is back on the road against Okanogan at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22.
