ScrEagles top Chewelah, fall to Brewster
REARDAN - The Screaming Eagles' girls basketball team had a 4-game winning streak snapped with a pair of losses to league foe Northwest Christian and non-conference opponent Brewster this week.
Reardan topped Chewelah 41-21 Friday, Dec. 15 behind 14 points from Tenice Waters and 12 points from MacKenzie Bjornberg, then fell to the Crusaders 58-54 in a nail biter Saturday, Dec. 16.
The Screaming Eagles started off guns ablazin' against NWC. Reardan went up 18-2 behind suffocating defense and good ball rotation on offense, but the Crusaders closed the first quarter on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 18-10.
NWC outscored Reardan by a point in the second quarter to trim the deficit further by halftime, 30-23.
The Crusaders' offense caught fire in the second half. Waters came alive in the scoring column to keep Reardan close in the third quarter, but NWC built a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter.
"We ran out of gas. We had the best opening on the season, but quickly got winded and weren't able to defend," Reardan head coach Bob Swannack said.
Reardan didn't go down quietly, as Tenice and Chasyn Waters combined to go on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 55-54. NWC got a bucket to follow with 53.4 seconds left.
The Screaming Eagles had a couple looks from three to tie, but neither found the net and NWC held on for the 4-point win.
"When we give up 58 points, we're not going to beat anyone because of our controlled play offensively," Swannack said. "We shot the ball much better and I expect it'll continue to get better as the season unfolds; however, we have to be able to play our pressure defense for 32 minutes and not let things get away from us."
Tenice and Chasyn Waters both finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Screaming Eagles were then the victim of the Bears by a score of 67-42 Tuesday, Dec. 19.
Reardan is back on the District 6 path this Friday night, visiting Okanogan at 6 p.m.
