First Day Hike set for Columbia Plateau Trail

CHENEY – Washington State Parks is hosting a First Day Hike at the Columbia Plateau Trail on Jan. 1. The hike is traditionally held on New Year’s Day, and participants don’t need a Discover Pass to join in. Rex Schultz, one of the guides leading the way, delved into what makes this trail so special.

The hike is from 1-3 p.m. and starts at the Cheney Trailhead.

The northern portion of the trail runs from Cheney to Sprague, but the First Day Hike won’t cover the whole distance.

“Of the parts of the trail I know, I recommend the section that goes through the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, which is accessed most easily from the Cheney Trailhead,” he said. “It is beautiful in all seasons.

“The portion of the Columbia Plateau Trail that we use for our First Day Hike is designed to be the easiest hike of the day because of the level nature of the trail and the accessibility of it being on pavement.

“Last year was the first year we did a hike on the Columbia Plateau Trail. We had 15 participants, and we are hoping to get at least that many again this year. I think I saw 12 were signed up as of yesterday.”

“We can take up to 30 people,” Schultz said.

Be sure to dress appropriately, he said.

“Don’t wear shoes that you are wearing for the first time. Choose comfortable shoes – preferably waterproof – and have some sort of traction device (like Yak Trax or snowshoes) with you just in case winter finally decides to show up,” he said.” Also, have fun and ask questions. Those of us lucky enough to work in the outdoor industry love to talk about the outdoors.”

Dogs must be leashed at all times, and the trail is stroller accessible.

As for surprises during the hike, Schultz said: “Well, there will be a gift bag with snacks and a First Day Hike souvenir.”
