Davenport boys muscle past UCA

Gorillas hold Lions to 20 points

DAVENPORT - After losing 7 of their first 9 games to start the 2023-24 season, the Gorilla boys basketball team has won two straight games after a 42-20 win over Upper Columbia Academy Thursday, Jan. 4.

Offensive production was at a premium, with the Gorillas holding the Lions to just three points in the first quarter and two points in the third quarter.

"The kids know where to be, it's just making sure we're in those positions," Davenport head coach Matt Henry said. "I was really happy to see them have a good showing defensively."

Davenport had an inefficient offensive game itself but found just enough scoring in 18 points from Maddox Schumacher and 10 points and 11 rebounds from Jaeger Jacobsen.

"The shot felt pretty good today," Schumacher said. "With that, I credit my teammates just being able to find an open spot and being able to work it inside-out."

The Gorillas led 9-3 after a quarter, 18-10 at halftime and 31-12 after three quarters. Henry said the team executed on offense well but couldn't manage to hit shots consistently.

"Execution was good, we just couldn't get that darn thing in the basket," Henry said. "I liked where the kids were at. We ran all the things we needed to run. The lid was just kind of set on there, except for Maddox."

Davenport improved to 3-4 in league play and 4-7 overall with the victory ahead of a Tuesday night date with the Liberty Lancers.

Liberty topped the visiting Gorillas 60-54 Jan. 9.

The Gorillas are at Asotin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13.
