DAVENPORT - After a disappointing loss to St. George's the night prior, the Gorilla girls made sure a similar result to an on-paper inferior opponent wouldn't occur on Senior Night. Davenport stepped on the gas pedal early and didn't let up in a 59-26 win over Jenkins (Chewelah) Saturday, Jan. 27.
Davenport then topped Northwest Christian 70-66 Tuesday, Jan. 30 to finish the regular season 12-8 overall.
The Gorillas fully dominated the first quarter against Chewelah, taking a 17-1 lead as five players found the basket.
That lead swelled to 31-6 by halftime as senior Jensyn Jacobsen and sophomore Glenna Soliday notched eight points apiece. Davenport suffocated the Cougars with a full-court press all half.
"We didn't really have height to our advantage, so it was, 'let's try to bug them,'" Jacobsen said. "We played them before and knew that pressure works well, so it was (to) try to get ahead."
Davenport played without sophomore Clare Lathrop, who was out due to illness.
In the second half, Davenport head coach Stacia Soliday substituted players in and out with the game in hand. The Gorillas led 50-16 at the end of the third quarter.
Jacobsen led the way on Senior Night, scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds. Charlotte Soliday scored 14 points and had five rebounds off the bench.
Glenna Soliday added 12 points and six rebounds, while Samantha Stiles had 10 points for a balanced Davenport offensive attack.
"We looked more energetic and the emphasis was some fast breaking, and we were able to press," Stacia Soliday said. "It was a better outcome for us, getting some steals leading to the fast break."
Davenport finished third in a loaded Northeast 2B North Division and will begin the District 7 2B Tournament against Liberty at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3.
With a win, Davenport would advance to the district semifinals. A loss would send the Gorillas to the loser's bracket.
