Gorillas rout Chewelah

DAVENPORT - It was a Senior Night to remember for the Gorilla boys basketball team, which dominated Jenkins (Chewelah) 62-39 on a night when seniors Jaeger Jacobsen, Nick Kruger and Maddox Schumacher were recognized Saturday, Jan. 27.

The win was sandwiched between a 55-41 loss to St. George's Friday, Jan. 26 and a 63-42 fall at Northwest Christian Tuesday, Jan. 30 to conclude the regular season.

Davenport jumped on the Cougars early, taking a 14-6 lead behind eight points and a pair of assists resulting in Schumacher 3-pointers from Caige Colbert.

The lead swelled to 31-20 by halftime behind Colbert's 10 points, Schumacher's nine points and Jacobsen's eight points.

Davenport and Chewelah played almost evenly in the third quarter before the Gorillas pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 23-point victory.

"Basketball's such an interesting game because there's a bunch of counters of what the other teams do," Davenport head coach Matt Henry said. "(We were) able to just hit our spots and making sure we were in the right spots, and then knocking down shots helps too."

Colbert finished with a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds. Schumacher added 18 points while Jacobsen had eight points and 10 rebounds.

"We had a good game plan coming out of the half about what to do with their defense, the 1-2-2 (zone)," Schumacher said. "Being able to recognize that and be in correct spots and be able to break that, that's kind of how we got to that good, successful level."

The Gorillas held off the rival Reardan Screaming Eagles to claim the No. 4 seed in the District 7 2B Tournament, thanks in large part to sweeping Reardan in the regular season. Davenport finished the regular season 8-12.

Davenport played the winner of a matchup between Chewelah and Upper Columbia Academy in a game that occurred after press time Thursday, Feb. 1 in the first round of Districts.

With a win, Davenport would advance to the double-elimination quarterfinals against Colfax at 6 p.m. at West Valley Saturday, Feb. 3. A loss Thursday night would end the Gorillas' season.
