Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!
WENATCHEE — The Davenport boys basketball team played evenly with the Lake Roosevelt Raiders for over two quarters in a winner-to-state, loser-out District 6/7 Crossover matchup last weekend. But it takes four quarters to defeat the No. 4 team in the state, and that’s what the Gorillas learned as the Raiders pulled away for a 69-47 victory Friday, Feb. 16.
The loss ended Davenport’s season. The Gorillas finished 10-16 overall and went 2-4 in postseason play.
“The season, with all its ups and downs, was a success,” Davenport head coach Matt Henry said. “After winning state last year, it was really important as coaches and players to compare this year’s team to itself, not to get caught up comparing ourselves to last year. Our goal at the start of the season was to get to the crossover game and we accomplished it.”
Davenport played evenly with Lake Roosevelt in the first quarter of last Friday’s crossover. The game was tied 17-17 after eight minutes, as both Caige Colbert and Jaeger Jacobsen hit shots early.
Lake Roosevelt built a 30-25 lead by halftime, but the Gorillas cut that deficit to 38-36 in the third quarter.
That was when the 22-1 Raiders, whose only blemish this year is a loss at top-ranked Columbia (Burbank), exploded. Lake Roosevelt went on a 15-2 run and coasted in the fourth quarter to victory.
“We executed our game plan for most of the game,” Henry said. “Unfortunately, when we got out of our game plan, LR is good enough to really make you pay.”
Jacobsen led Davenport with 13 points in his final game as a Gorilla, while Colbert added 12 points. In their final career games, Maddox Schumacher notched nine points and Nick Kruger had eight points for the Gorillas.
