Mills-Jay trial continued to July

DAVENPORT — The trial of a man facing alternative charges of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter regarding the death of an infant boy was continued to Monday, July 22.

Jordan Russell Mills-Jay, 30, of Spokane and Reardan, is accused of causing the death of 5-month-old “Zander” in a Euclid Road home after medical officials allegedly found evidence of child abuse that caused the infant’s death. The baby died from his injuries at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane 16 days after being airlifted to the hospital, records state.

Mills-Jay was arrested June 26, 2023.

He is the listed father on Zander’s birth certificate, but records state another man may have fathered the infant and his twin sister.

Mills-Jay pleaded not guilty to the charges last July, then posted a reduced cash bond of $1,500 out of Lincoln County Jail last August. He was ordered to live with his sister in Spokane by presiding Judge Gary Libey of Whitman County while awaiting trial.

The trial was first continued from Nov. 8 to Jan. 17 at an Oct. 2023 readiness hearing. Then, it was continued to Wednesday, April 24 at a Dec. 2023 hearing.

This week, an April 9 readiness hearing was stricken and the trial was again continued, this time to Monday, July 22…nearly 13 months to the day from Zander’s death.

“These are complicated cases,” Prosecuting Attorney Adam Walser said. “They take a lot of time to prepare.”

Walser said he’s asking for a July 2 readiness hearing, but Libey hadn’t signed an order by press time.
