REARDAN - Thanks to the Mule Days Committee, new "Welcome to Reardan" signs greet travelers approaching from each end of town. A crew of volunteers, under the supervision of co-chairs Stan and Jill Schwartz, erected the signs Monday, April 22.
Each year, the Mule Days Committee selects a project to benefit the community.
"We decided to replace the old signs because after 64 years they were weathered and rotting away," Stan Schwartz said.
John Rouse, who owns WEMCO Incorporated, designed and donated the signs. Rouse, a Reardan High School alumnus, integrated the old with the new in his design.
He "borrowed" a high school logo created by girls basketball coach Bob Swannack of a sheaf of wheat superimposed on an American flag. He also offered a nod to the past with the image of the school's former Indian mascot.
Jill Schwartz thanked Rouse, Jeremy Anderson, Justus Andersen, Bill Sullivan, Ed Gray, Jim Medaris and Valley Wide Cooperative for the time, labor and money they donated toward this project.
One of the old signs, built by the school's agriculture class in 1961, was donated to the Lincoln County Museum.
