Reardan Livestock Judging team wins state

Competition won at Jr. Livestock Show

SPOKANE - The Reardan FFA Chapter is no stranger to winning awards, and this year's Livestock Judging team was no different. The team won a state championship by defeating 37 other teams at the Junior Livestock Show of Spokane Wednesday, May 1.

The win qualifies the team for the National competition in Indianapolis in October.

Members Emersen Sprecher, Kashley Brown, Paige Cushman, Amelia Ray, Rysen Soliday and Olivia Wicks were tested individually in sorting livestock and oral reasons, then collectively in a team activity.

"Consistency with sorting is always a battle, but that's largely the reason why they were able to secure the win," advisor Rick Perleberg said. "They out sorted everyone by a substantial margin."

Ray said the team spent multiple Tuesday mornings practicing and got warmed up with a second-place finish at competition in Asotin prior to the Junior Livestock Show.

She said the team will now attend as many competitions as possible, despite the constraints provided by a slow summer competition schedule, and up the ante in practicing to prepare for Nationals.

Perleberg said his top four scorers will be able to compete at Nationals. The Chapter will determine those four members in the next few months.

"We'll look at growth and performance to make an objective decision," he said.

But for now, Perleberg said he's proud of his team for winning a tough state competition.

"There's a lot of really good teams in the state," he said.

The Chapter is also preparing for the state convention this week.

Two $40,000 grants awarded

In addition to state convention preparation and Livestock Judging victories, FFA has received two $40,000 grants for the school's new Fred and Kathy Springer Memorial Greenhouse.

The first grant is from the Washington FFA Foundation, which Perleberg applied for, and is for equipment to aide in construction of the greenhouse.

And the second is a Washington CASE grant, which Dan'a Borland applied for, and is for equipment technology related to the greenhouse.
