121 candidates file for public office

DAVENPORT — Over 120 candidates relevant to the citizens of Lincoln County filed for public office in anticipation of the Aug. 6 primary election during filing week Monday, May 6 to Friday, May 10.

County voters will see federal, congressional, statewide, legislative, countywide and judicial candidates on their ballots this summer.

Locally, incumbent County Commissioners Jo Gilchrist and Scott Hutsell filed for re-election and won’t be challenged.

Victoria Iverson and Adam Walser will both advance to the general election as the candidates to replace Jeffrey S. Barkdull as county Superior Court Judge in the county’s only contested race.

Joe Armand, the Mayor of Harrington, was the lone filer for P.U.D. Commissioner No. 2.

12 Republicans and one Democrat signed up to be precinct committee officers.

Carol Paul of Edwall, Michael Hardy of rural Harrington, Joseph Melder of Lamona, Art Deppner of Mondovi, Ronald Horlacher of Riverview, Becki Krause of Sherman, Craig Madsen of Waukon, Dale Anderson of Creston, Shanell Stewart of Davenport, Peter Davenport of Harrington, Jerry Schulz of Reardan and Shelley Sieverkropp of Wilbur all signed up as Republicans, while Ted Bruya of Odessa was the lone Democratic committee officer to register.

In Legislative District No. 9, which Lincoln County lies in, incumbent Reps. Mary Dye, R-Pomeroy and Joe Schmick, R-Colfax, filed for re-election and will be challenged by registered Democrats.

Dye is being challenged by Patrick Miller of Cheney, while Schmick is being challenged by Pam Kohlmeier and Arianna Arends, both of Spokane.

State Senator Mark Schoesler, R-Ritzville, filed for re-election and is unchallenged.

In other races, 11 candidates filed for U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, D-Seattle’s seat. 11 more candidates filed to replace retiring Congressional District No. 5 Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, while 28 candidates are vying for outgoing Gov. Jay Inslee’s job.

Other statewide races on the county ballot include Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Auditor, Attorney General, Commissioner of Public Lands, Supt. Of Public Instruction and Insurance Commissioner.

Additionally, three state Supreme Court Justice seats and one Court of Appeals seat are up for election.

Ballots for the Aug. 6 primary will be mailed July 17.
