Schumacher finishes 17th for boys

TUMWATER - Odessa senior Melloney Deife topped her 2023 third place finish at the WIAA State Golf 1B/2B Tournament with a second-place finish in the 2024 iteration Wednesday, May 22.

Deife's finish is Odessa's best since Kira Powell won the state championship in 2012.

The senior entered Wednesday's final round tied for second place, one shot off the lead, after shooting an 88 in the first round Tuesday, May 21. She matched that total by shooting another 88 Wednesday.

Deife was the only local girl to qualify for the state tournament.

On the boys side, Davenport senior Maddox Schumacher was the lone Gorilla or Tiger to make the cut for Wednesday. Schumacher ended up finishing 17th after shooting an 86 on Tuesday and an 83 on Wednesday.

Odessa senior Jacob Scrupps was the lowest local scorer who missed Wednesday's cut, shooting a 90 on Tuesday. Fellow senior Jared Valverde shot a 91, while junior Levi Hardung shot a 92 and senior Chad Strebeck shot a 96.

Davenport sophomore Mac Larmer shot a 101 in his first state tournament.
