Hopkins resigns as elementary principal

Hargrave to fill interim position

DAVENPORT - Elementary principal Sarita Hopkins is resigning her post to be closer to family. After two years working for the School District here following a stint with Cheney Middle School, her resignation was accepted by the School Board Tuesday, May 28.

Hopkins has accepted a teaching position with North Thurston Public Schools. Her husband, Jim, is stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord Air Force Base and her daughter recently moved to the West Side.

Her resignation is effective at the end of the school year.

Due to a desire to budget conservatively caused by concerns about supposed ineffective state school funding models and the difficulty that comes with hiring administrative positions this late in the school year, the District is getting creative with its plan to replace Hopkins next school year.

Current secondary principal Noelle Carstens will move back to the elementary school position she held prior to Hopkins' arrival, which was a domino effect of Chad Prewitt taking over the superintendent position from the retiring Jim Kowalkowski in 2022.

Carstens will also be the middle school principal. Meanwhile, current Pathways advisor Jennifer Hargrave will become interim high school principal, as unanimously voted on by the Board Tuesday.

Hargrave will also help oversee a new Pathways advisor and continue some work there.
