Suicidal man assaults police, faces charges

Cooke claims he hears voices in his head

DAVENPORT — A teenager charged with three counts of assault against a law enforcement officer will seek medical evaluations after informing the Lincoln County Superior Court that he hears voices and does not remember the assaults.

Isaac Cooke, 18, of Reardan, faces a Class C felony with three counts of third-degree assault of a law enforcement officer.

An order for competency evaluations was filed with the court Tuesday, July 9. Cooke will appear at his next Lincoln County Superior Court hearing at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 23.

According to court documents, Cooke was hearing voices and could not remember what occurred.

Records further state he could only communicate with his attorney without losing his train of thought and appeared unable to understand simple instructions.

Cooke is held in Lincoln County Jail and will be examined in the facility.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, a dispatch was broadcast over the radio on Thursday, July 4, of a report of a suicidal man near the intersection of Euclid Road and Tramm Road.

Deputies Stein, Schmidt, Wiedmer and Wardlaw responded.

According to Stein, Cooke was identified as the suicidal man. He appeared to be pacing along the roadway with an unidentified object in his hand.

“Deputy Schmidt advised via radio that they were fighting,” Stein said.

According to Wardlaw, Cooke approached, pushed and hit him in the face. Cooke was taken to the ground in handcuffs.

“While on the ground, Cooke kicked Deputy Schmidt,” records show, noting Cooke walked to Wiedmer’s car and began to beat on it.

According to Stein, Cooke kicked Schmidt again while put in the patrol car.
