FEMA releases guide for fire evacuations

What to do in case of emergency

DAVENPORT - The Columbia Basin Fire has prompted evacuations in the Tyler area, with Sprague fire units currently on scene.

The Red Cross is setting up an evacuation shelter at Cheney High School. Although no evacuations have been ordered in Lincoln County, the fire is moving northeast, away from the area.

Residents near this fire should remain aware of their surroundings and evacuate if they feel unsafe.

With the dry summer season and recent red flag warnings, it's essential for residents to stay vigilant and prepared for wildfires. Hot and dry weather increases the risk, making it crucial to understand evacuation levels and prepare accordingly.

A wildfire threat in the area means planning and packing in case of evacuation.

When evacuation is likely, pack necessary items and ready family, pets, and vehicle for potential departure. Key items include a family plan, personal items, prescriptions, irreplaceable photographs, secured pets, and important documents. Move individuals with mobility or medical issues and relocate livestock to a safe place.

If an evacuation order is issued, occupants must leave via pre-designated routes. Perimeter roadblocks are typically established.

Take family, pets, necessary items including medications and important papers and evacuate immediately.

Check in with the local Red Cross shelter to inform them of whereabouts. Drive safely and slowly with lights on, remaining aware of surroundings.

According to FEMA, a basic emergency supply kit should include water, non-perishable food, an extra cell phone battery or charger, a battery-powered or hand crank radio, a flashlight, a first aid kit, a whistle, a dust mask, moist towelettes, garbage bags, plastic ties, a non-sparking wrench or pliers, a can opener and local maps.

Additional items include prescription medications, glasses, infant formula, diapers, pet supplies, important documents in a waterproof container, cash, emergency reference materials, sleeping bags, a change of clothing, a fire extinguisher, matches in a waterproof container, personal hygiene items, mess kits and activities for children.
