Harrington City Council meets

Discusses water rates, claims and grants

HARRINGTON - During the recent Harrington City Council meeting on Wednesday, August 14, discussions were focused on rising water and sewer rates, recent claims, and ongoing grant applications.

City officials addressed a significant increase in water rates, with the current subscription fee set at $54.98 for the first 7,470 gallons.

This represents a $15 increase from the previous year.

Additionally, sewer rates have risen to $88.83, reflecting a $27 hike.

Council members expressed a desire to restructure the billing system to potentially lower overall water bills by reducing base rates and increasing usage rates.

A motion was made and approved to review and approve the new claims.

Key expenditures included payments for water and sewer system improvements, such as the installation of a new pump and necessary electrical work.

The new pump has improved water pressure, although it has also stressed existing pipes.

The city will incur minimal out-of-pocket expenses for these improvements thanks to additional funding received from the state.

Council members also reviewed reimbursements related to city expenses.

These included costs for equipment such as a power sensor and new phones, which are part of efforts to modernize the city's infrastructure and reduce operational costs.

The mayor, Joe Armand, reported progress on various projects, including the submission of the city's water system plan to the Department of Health and the ongoing review of the wastewater treatment plan.

A grant application has been submitted for a hydrogeologist to identify a new well site, and another grant application is in the works for new water meters.

The goal is to relocate and upgrade meters to ensure consistency and accuracy in billing.

In closing remarks, Armand noted that the city's water system is currently approved for 260 connections, with 252 in use and 253 expected soon.

Council members emphasized the need for timely action on water connections due to limited availability.

The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn at 8:49 p.m.
