County athletes return to action

Football kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday

DAVENPORT — Athletes countywide will be returning to action this week as the fall 2024 school sports season officially kicks off.

Davenport, Odessa and Reardan football teams all hit the field Friday night for their season-openers.

After struggling to field a full football team last year, the Davenport Gorillas are back. They Gorillas will be on the field in Mabton, where they will face the Class 2B Vikings.

The Vikings managed to field an 11-man team last year, but they went winless for eight games, before a victory over Highland on Nov. 3.

With the Gorillas moving back up from 8-man to 11-man football and the Vikings’ dismal 2023 season, both teams hope to open with a win to set the tone this year.

The Reardan Screaming Eagles, meanwhile, will host the Brewster Bears in a rematch of a Nov. 3, 2023, game in Brewster.

On their home field, Brewster edged Reardan, 14-13, to advance to the first-round of the playoffs with a 5-5 record. But the Goldendale Timberwolves ended their season, 67-23, in Goldendale.

Reardan went 4-4 on the 2024 season, and 3-3 in league, good enough for a third-place finish in the Northeast 2B league.

Meanwhile, perennial Class 1B powerhouse Odessa will host the Columbia High School Lions from Hunters.

The last times these two teams faced off on the gridiron, it was a scoring festival for the Odessa Tigers.

The Tigers cruised to an easy 82-0 win at home.

Odessa wrapped up the 2023 season with a 6-4 record; the Lions finished 2-7.

All three games are set to kick off at 7 p.m. Friday night, Sept. 6.

Girls sports

Volleyball games get underway at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with Reardan traveling to Ritzville to take on the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague/Harrington Broncos.

Last year, the Broncos finished second in state 2B volleyball. And with only one senior graduating, the Broncos are looking to make a state title run again.

The rivals will face off in Gilson Gymnasium on East Wellsandt Road in Ritzville.

The Screaming Eagles volleyball team will host Lake Roosevelt at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in its home-opener.

Volleyball fans in Odessa and Davenport will have to wait a few days.

The Odessa Tigers girls volleyball team plays its first game at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Moses Lake Christian Academy in Moses Lake, before returning for a Sept. 12 home-opener at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, against Valley Christian School of Spokane Valley.

Last year, the Odessa girls reached the state 1B tournament, but came home without a trophy. They’re looking for two big wins to open the season next week.

Davenport girls will get on the court for the first time this season on Nov. 14 when they host Tonasket at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14.

The girls soccer season will take to the pitch next week.

Davenport girls will host the Tonasket Tigers on Saturday, Sept. 14. That game gets underway at 11 a.m.

Meanwhile, the Reardan girls will have two games next week.

The Screaming Eagles will host the Okanogan Bulldogs at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, then travel to Spokane to take on St. George’s at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12.
