100 years ago

Duck season is set for opening on Tuesday, the bag limit is 20 ducks per week. Since the season starts one half hour before sunrise, the following Odessa businesses will not be opening until eleven in the morning: The Quality Store, Odessa Hardware and Implement, Farmers and Merchants Bank, Michaelsen & Koth, W. H. Luher & Co., and First National Bank.

Davenport Schools opened Monday for the upcoming term. Enrollment is 215 in grade school and 115 in the High School. The freshman class has 35 members and the 8th grade is a large class as well. A fair number of High School students are still working harvest and will report later.

75 years ago

At their regular monthly meeting, the Reardan City Council granted a permit to Mr. and Mrs. George Thribbett to build a restaurant and living quarters on the corner of Lake and Broadway streets on lots recently purchased from William J Colville.

Pat Hunt, coach of the Davenport football team, addressed the Commercial Club. He told of the grid prospects for this season and urged that all townspeople turn out to support the team.

50 years ago

Two separate traffic stops conducted last week by WSP Patrolman Dan Zimmerman resulted in the recovery of a stolen car, the arrest of 3 juveniles. A hitchhiker in the stolen vehicle was arrested for possession of illegal fireworks and marijuana. In a second stop, a Bridgeport man and his passenger from New Mexico were found to be in possession of marijuana when they were pulled over for a traffic infraction.

The sausages for Deutschesfest are in the process of being made. 5,000 lbs are being made. Three thousand pounds will be consumed during the fest and the other 2,000 lbs. will be sold to fulfill various orders. The sausage is being made by Richard and Rita Voise with help from a couple others.

Officials from the Russian Federation are visiting eastern Washington this week as part of one of the largest visitation programs in history. Of particular interest in Odessa is their visit to the genealogy exhibit during Duetschesfest.

Washington State Utilities Chairman urged Major long distance carriers to be more transparent about their rates and fees, or face additional requirements by the state in order to protect consumers.

The Keller Ferry is out of service until further notice due to a crack in the hull. Water is seeping into the internal compartments through a one inch crack on the port side just below the waterline. At the current time there is no timeline for the ferry to be back in service.

Students and staff at Davenport Schools are launching a drive to raise funds for victims of the Carlton Complex Fire. K-8 students will be conducting a “Quarter drive” while the High school is having a “Dollar drive”.
