Gorillas fall in 11-man opener

DAVENPORT - The Gorillas made their return to 11-man football Saturday, Sept. 14, on their home field.

But the visiting Tonasket Tigers reminded them how different the game is from 8-mail ball.

The Tigers won the 2B matchup, 38-26.

The first half of the game was a back-and forth battle, with the Gorillas taking the ball down the field and scoring on their first drive, with a pass from quarterback Bennett Wagner to wide receiver Joel Odenrider.

The conversion failed and the Gorillas took a 6-0 lead with 9:12 left in the first quarter.

Tonasket would answer - and then some - on its next drive.

Rushing off the right tackle from the Gorillas 4 yard line, running back Kevin Polito scored for the Tigers with 6:41 to go in the quarter. Polito would add the 2-point conversion to give Tonasket a 8-6 lead.

The Gorillas turned over the ball on a fumble on its next set of downs. But the Gorillas would take the ball back on an interception by Caige Colbert with 3:34 left in the quarter.

With 47 seconds left in the quarter, Wagner hit Colbert for an 81-yard TD. The 2-point conversion was good and Davenport closed out the quarter with a 14-8 lead.

Tonasket would score again on its next position.

With 9:55 left in the first half, Polito took the ball on a counter and rolled 49 yards for the score. Colton Wilson added the 2-point conversion and Tonasket was up, 16-14.

Davenport answered with a drive of its own.

And with 2:19 left in the first quarter, Wagner hit McGuire Knopp for a 5-yard TD pass. The conversion failed, but Davenport held a 20-16 lead.

It looked as thought it was only going to take 17 seconds for Tonasket to take the lead. But a 55-yard TD pass to Gerardo Hernandez was called back due to holding.

That didn't stop the Tigers from marching down the field before the half expired.

And with 1:01 left in the half, Polito took another counter 54 yards for a TD. He added the 2-point conversion and Tonasket took the lead, 24-20.

In the second half, the Tigers would score two more times, while holding Davenport to just 6 more points.

Davenport (0-1) hosts Colfax (2-0) this Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Colfax comes into the game off a 33-0 drubbing of the Kettle Falls Bulldogs.

The Gorillas aren't the only ones at home this Friday.

In the Sausage Bowl, it'll be the Waterville-Manson Shockers (1-1) across the field. The Shockers are coming into the game from a 36-22 loss to Soap Lake.
