Reardan man faces trial in babys death

REARDAN — A local man accused in the death of a 5-month-old boy last year appeared in Lincoln County Superior Court in Davenport for a readiness hearing Oct. 29.

Jordan Russell Mills-Jay, 30, is facing a 9 a.m. Nov. 12 trial for first-degree manslaughter and second-degree murder in the June 21, 2023, death of “Zander” at the 52186 Euclid Road home he shares with the baby’s mother, Kayla Anthony.

Mills-Jay is listed as Zander’s father on the birth certificate, but court records show another man may be the father of the deceased baby and his twin sister.

Appearing before visiting Whitman County Judge Gary Libey, Mills-Jay was represented by attorney David Hearrean. Hearrean was appointed as his public defender last month after Mills-Jay was found indigent by the court Sept. 11.

His previous attorney, Brooke D. Hagara, was allowed to withdraw from the case Sept. 11, citing a “privileged” reason for her request to no longer represent Mills-Jay. She also cited the court’s decision that Mills-Jay is indigent.

In court records, Mills-Jay is accused of causing the fatal injuries to the baby on June 5, 2023. The baby was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, put into a medically induced coma, but died June 21, 2023.
