Odessa School Board hires two new coaches

Members hear several reports Oct. 23

ODESSA — The School Board heard a series of reports, hired coaches approved of several plans and policies when it met Oct. 23.

By unanimous vote, the board hired Laura Claler as the new cheerleading coach and Mathew Roberson as the junior high school assistant girls basketball coach.

The board also unanimously approved on second reading the equivalency credit opportunities policy, the highly capable plan, the application for a Perkins grant and a partnership with Jay Tyus in appliying for an Innovations in Agriculture grant.

In other business, the board heard the following reports:

• Superintendent Steve Fisk provided information on Homecoming, communications, a a breakfast open house. He also provided the board with the ASB balance sheet for September and noted an unassigned fund balance of $800,990.17 in the General Fund.

• As principal, Cori Kane reported on the artificial intelligence program she attended, teacher observations, MAP testing and a new reading program.

• As athletic director, Kane reported on girls junior high volleyball and basketball. Kane noted the boys high school baseball team will also be getting new uniforms. A junior high team will also take the field if there are enough players.

• Operations Supervisor Justin Parr said he is preparing to winterize the school. He also reported he is looking into possible grants for roof repairs and football field lighting. He is also researching options for replacing the scoreboard. Parr said the fume hood in the high school science room has been repaired.
