High-speed chase ended in Creston
CRESTON — A man who led law enforcement on a high-speed chase on U.S. Highway 2 on Halloween will face a Dec. 18 trial.
Alberto Lorenzo, 39, remains in the Lincoln County Jail in Davenport on $50,000 bail on a charge of attempting to elude law enforcement. Trial is tentatively set for 9 a.m. Dec. 18; a readiness hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Nov. 26.
According to court records, Lorenzo is accused of speeding westbound through Reardan in excess of 60 mph at about 10:25 p.m. Oct. 31, Halloween night.
Reardan police notified the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office of the dangerous driver and deputies located the vehicle on U.S. Highway 2, nearing Davenport at 107 mph, records show. Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but the driver continued past them, and through the city at a speed of 95 mph.
The driver slowed to about 80 mph near the intersection of Morgan Street and state Highway 25, but the driver continued westbound.
Deputy Schmidt deployed spike strips on U.S. Highway 2 near Leffel Road, records show. The spikes punctured two of the tires, but the car continued westbound on the highway at about 70 mph.
Nearing Milepost 246, the speed was back up to 90 mph. And by Sterrett Road, it was traveling at 105 mph, records show. Deputies could see sparks coming from the vehicle’s metal rims against the highway asphalt.
The chase continued into Creston at 97 mph, records show. At about Milepost 229, the driver — later identified as Lorenzo, lost control of the vehicle, which spun and collided with an embankment.
Lorenzo climbed bout of the driver seat and attempted to run westbound, records show. A deputy pursued with gun drawn.
The deputy eventually caught Lorenzo, tackled him and placed him in handcuffs, records show.
Lorenzo was placed in the back of the vehicle and transported to the Lincoln County Jail, records show. During transport, he complained there was something in his head and that his head was going to explode. At Lorenzo’s request, the deputy turned on the lights in the back seat.
Lorenzo was booked into the jail for attempting to elude law enforcement.
During discussions with deputies, the suspect claimed he had mental health issues as well as having smoked methamphetamine earlier that day, records show.
