Davenport City Council approves budget

Council listens to public concerns

DAVENPORT — The Davenport City Council discussed ongoing issues and future plans during its regular meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Matt Schneider addressed the council regarding concerns about the city’s farming contract and the treatment of his supplier. Schneider, representing Schneider Farms, requested modifications to the current agreement and suggested a meeting to resolve the issues.

Mayor Jonathan Chapman recommended Schneider meet with City Administrator Steve Goemmel to discuss the matter further.

Mayor Chapman also suggested the city consider purchasing a new plow truck, citing the aging fleet. Council members Cory Hollis and Mike Wilkinson agreed to evaluate the current vehicles and report back.

A Street Committee meeting was scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Jan. 8, 2025.

Deputy Matt Gilbert reported 95 calls for service in November and answered council questions about mental health-related codes.

Council member Patrick Katz requested data on traffic citations for the next meeting.

City Administrator Steve Goemmel presented Ordinance 1204, which repeals Ordinance 1203 and adopts the annual budget for 2025. Goemmel said unexpected invoices affected carryover balances, requiring adjustments.

Council member Mike Wilkinson moved to approve the ordinance in its first and final reading. Cory Hollis seconded, and the motion passed.

The council approved claims and vouchers totaling $145,635.92 and payroll vouchers totaling $71,981.84.

In committee reports, Daniel Coriell shared updates on discussions with Davenport High School regarding a new user agreement for the city’s athletic fields. Coriell said the school declined use of the soccer field and proposed another meeting on Jan. 8, 2025.

He also suggested additional stop signs at the intersections of 5th and Washington Streets and 7th and Washington Streets.

Mayor Chapman noted that a planned FEMA presentation was postponed due to technical issues and asked the council to review tourism grant requests from the Lincoln County Museum.

The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
