Screaming Eagles rally past Crusaders
REARDAN – After squeaking by Davenport the night before, the Screaming Eagles' girls basketball team won a hard fought game against Northwest Christian Saturday, Dec. 14. Tenice Waters' dominance in the fourth quarter catapulted Reardan to the 61-53 win.
When the teams met last season, NWC won by 24 points over the freshman heavy squad fielded by Reardan coach Bob Swannack.
In the game's opening minutes, Waters lit the fuse for her explosive night with two quick 3-point shots from behind the arc. Raegan Soliday, Rylynn Green, Emersen Sprecher and Chasyn Waters all scored points in the first quarter to give Reardan a 17-15 lead.
Reardan extended its lead to 32-27 at halftime. Besides scoring 11 first half points, Tenice Waters controlled the boards with seven rebounds. Chasyn Waters kept pace with her older sister with seven points and six rebounds.
The Crusaders came storming back in the third quarter behind Leah Platt's eight points. NWC outscored Reardan 19-11 to take a 46-43 lead into the fourth quarter.
The game's last eight minutes belonged to Tenice Waters. With 4:20 left in the game, she hit a jumper to tie the game at 47. She then hit a long-range trey to give the Screaming Eagles a three point lead. After that, she dished passes to Green and Mackenzie Bjornberg for easy baskets to complete the comeback and secure the 61-53 win.
"Tonight, my team needed me, and I needed my team, so I just said, 'Let's play,'" Waters said.
She credited Swannack with refocusing the team during a timeout.
"After the timeout I told teammates, 'We either go now, or we're losing. There is no other way, so I just went. I think the best thing I did was to get my teammates involved," she said.
Tenice Waters ended the game with 26 points and seven rebounds. Green had a solid game, scoring 14 points. Chasyn Waters recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sprecher and Bjornberg both scored four points and Soliday had three.
Juliana Pope led the Crusaders in scoring with 20 points.
"I think we played well as a team and really hustled tonight," Soliday said. "Moving forward we need to improve our help-side defense and playing more consistent throughout the entire game."
The win improved Reardan's record to 4-1 in NE2B play. After the loss, NWC record also stands at 4-1. The Screaming Eagles' next home game is Friday, Dec. 20 against Kettle Falls.
