Reardan holds off Davenport in Winterfest win

Gorilla girls pummeled by the Eagles

REARDAN - Two years ago when the Screaming Eagles' girls hosted Davenport in their annual Winterfest basketball game, the visiting Gorillas pummeled them 67-14. On Friday, Dec. 13, the teams met again. This time, behind Tenice Waters' 20 point effort, Reardan came out on top, winning 43-40.

From the outset, it appeared the game might go down to the wire, and it did. Waters scored eight points and Davenport's Glenna Soliday scored seven points in their first quarter shoot-out that ended with Reardan taking a 14-12 lead.

Waters scored 10 more points in the second quarter while her team limited Davenport to three points, all scored by Soliday. At halftime the Screaming Eagles led 29-15.

In the third quarter, Reardan outscored Davenport 12-11 as seven Screaming Eagles scored points. The Gorillas kept pace with five points from Clare Lathrop and four points from Soliday. Reardan started the fourth quarter maintaining a 41-26 lead.

The last frame belonged to the Gorillas whose full court pressure handcuffed the Screaming Eagles. Charlotte Soliday sparked her team's comeback with several steals and a three-point basket. Glenna Soliday scored six points in the quarter and Lathrop added four points. Before the Gorillas could complete their comeback, the scoreboard buzzer sounded, ending the game. Davenport outscored Reardan 14-2 in the quarter but lost the game 43-40.

Tenice Waters ended the game with 20 points, six rebounds and six steals. Chasyn Waters scored eight points. Rylynn Green and Olivia Wicks both scored five points. Raegan Soliday had three points and Emersen Sprecher scored two.

Glenna Soliday led the Gorillas in scoring with 16 points. She also recorded seven rebounds and three steals. Lathrop scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Addie Schneider scored eight points and Charlotte Soliday scored five points and had five steals.

"This is the fourth game in a row that we started well but did not finish games," Reardan head coach Bob Swannack said. "We need better conditioning and better bench play. When the bench is able to contribute at a higher rate, all cylinders will start clicking for 32 minutes.

Swannack said that some of his girls lack the stamina to play at a high caliber for the length of a game.

"This will only get better as time moves forward," he said.

Bjornberg was pleased with the Screaming Eagles' effort.

"Because it was Winterfest we were hyped. We got it in our minds that we had to win. I think we played well together, and we played physical.

She stated that complacency almost cost them the win.

"In the fourth quarter we got tired and a little too comfortable with the fact that we were up" she said. "It is unfortunate that our energy dropped. That is something we need to improve on."

Glenna Soliday expressed disappointment in her team's play.

"We were a little frazzled and confused tonight," she said.

"Toward the end of the game we better understood their play. We should have figured it out quicker. In the fourth quarter we went all out. We went aggressive and weren't afraid to pick up fouls because we needed to get points."

Reardan's win, and Davenport's loss leaves both teams at 4-1 on the season.

Reardan's next home game is Friday, Dec. 20 against Kettle Falls. Davenport plays three consecutive road games before playing Chewelah at home Saturday, Dec. 21.
