School board discusses water heater system replacement

Enrollment is projected to rise

DAVENPORT — Davenport High School’s aging water heater system was a key topic during the Davenport School Board meeting on Monday, Dec. 16.

The board reviewed a proposal for replacing the school’s water heater, which would involve demolishing the existing system and the installation of two new Lochinvar SHIELD SWR200N water heaters, along with a storage tank.

The estimated cost for the project is $33,993 plus WSST, with work planned to be carried out during regular hours, Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The equipment is in stock in Kent, Washington, and a good-faith survey will be conducted prior to mobilization.

Along with the water heater discussion, the board also addressed other topics, including policies for pregnant and parenting students, opioid-related overdose reversal and accommodations for staff with pregnancy or related conditions.

Additionally, enrollment projections for the 2024-2025 school year were discussed, and the board confirmed its meeting schedule for 2025.

Along with the water heater discussion, the board reviewed the student enrollment figures for the 2024-2025 school year, which are expected to see a steady increase.

The enrollment figures show a noticeable rise from previous years, with projections for 2024-2025 averaging around 658 students. This is up from 623 students in the 2023-2024 school year and 609 students in the 2022-2023 year. The increase marks a positive trend for the district, reflecting growth and continued community support.

The enrollment breakdown includes various student categories, such as special education, running start, and other programs like Pathways, LCV, and Bridges. Special education enrollment for the 2024-2025 year is currently at 91 students, compared to 86 in the previous year.

Running start enrollment is holding steady at 8.2 students per month for the 2024-2025 year, an increase from 4 students per month in 2023-2024.

Additionally, alternative learning programs (ALE) such as Pathways have seen a rise in participation, with 36.97 students enrolled in September 2024, compared to 23.32 in September 2023.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 27, at 6 p.m.
