Nation pauses for Carter

DAVENPORT — Post offices across the county and nation will be closed Thursday, Jan. 9, as the country observes a National Day of Mourning in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Dec. 29 at the age of 100.

Carter, the 39th president of the United States, died “peacefully” at his home in Plains, Georgia, according to a statement made online by his family.

President Joe Biden issued an executive order establishing the National Day of Mourning, directing all federal executive departments and agencies to close as a mark of respect.

The U.S. Postal Service announced that all post offices will be closed on Thursday, with no regular mail delivery. However, limited package delivery services will still be available.

Additionally, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ will suspend trading for the day, as U.S. markets observe the occasion.

Carter’s funeral will take place Thursday at Washington National Cathedral, allowing the nation to pay tribute to his legacy of public service and humanitarian efforts.
