Crash occurred near Ephrata
SOAP LAKE — A 39-year-old woman from Soap Lake, Wash., was killed in a fatal traffic crash on Thursday, Jan. 9, when another struck her vehicle at an intersection near Ephrata.
The deceased, identified as Jessica H. Oelke, was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe westbound on State Route 28 approximately four miles east of Ephrata at 7:27 p.m. when her vehicle was hit on the driver’s side by a 2018 Ford Mustang traveling northbound on Road 19 NW.
The Mustang, driven by George B. Martin, 59, of Moses Lake, failed to stop at a stop sign before the collision.
Oelke was pronounced dead at the scene, while Martin, who was wearing his seatbelt, was injured and transported via LifeFlight to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
Both vehicles were totaled, with the Mustang coming to rest on its roof in a ditch against a utility pole, and the Chevrolet Tahoe ending up in a ditch on the opposite side of the road.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, which is believed to have resulted from Martin’s failure to obey the stop sign.
Charges are pending.
The Washington State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
