Odessa band awarded $500 grant

Students and director "surprised"

ODESSA - The Odessa School District band program received an unexpected $500 grant from the Columbia Basin Foundation through its "Jazzy January" program.

Band director Daniel Lloyd said the Odessa band program did not apply for the grant but was selected after foundation representatives attended a pep band night and were impressed by the students' performance.

"I was surprised by it because I didn't apply for anything," Lloyd said. "They called us and told us they had money for us."

Lloyd has not yet decided how to use the funds but said the grant will go toward improving the band program.

"It was fun to see the lady come in with the big giant check, but we didn't get to keep it," he said.

Lloyd said he appreciates the recognition for Odessa's band, especially as a small school.

"Small schools think that we are going to get overlooked," he said. "I think it's nice that a small school like Odessa gets that recognition."

The Columbia Basin Foundation's "Jazzy January" program seeks out and supports arts programs in the region.
