District 6 girls see several qualify for state
SPOKANE - Several wrestlers from Wilbur-Creston, Reardan, Davenport and Almira- Coulee/Hartline secured top finishes at the District 6 Girls 1B/2B/1A Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Wilbur-Creston had a strong showing with multiple podium finishes.
Only the Top 2 girls at each weight advanced to state.
Lillian Monaghan took first in the 125-pound weight class, defeating Addison Stigall of Newport with a fall at 3:14.
Skyla Jensen, also from Wilbur-Creston, placed third in the same weight class with a fall victory over Kennedy Hatfield of Newport.
State-ranked Heather Wyborney claimed the 130-pound title, pinning Lyla Heinemann of Medical Lake in 1:10.
Heinemann finished second and advanced to state with Wyborney.
SunRae Monaghan placed second in the 155-pound bracket, falling to Hanna Perkins of Liberty (Spangle) in 17 seconds.
Reardan's Danika Bretz captured the championship in the 170-pound weight class, securing a win in the finals.
She pinned Almira-Coulee/Hartline's Jayden Hubbard in 1:56; both girls advance to state.
Almira-Coulee/Hart-line's Karis Butler won the 140-pound division, pinning Hailey Bouge of Republic-Curlew in 2:40.
Dayanna Mendoza placed second at 145.
Davenport's Emma Cash finished fourth in the 140-pound bracket after losing to Madelynn Bowlby of Colville, 7-1.
The state's top wrestlers will compete in the Mat Classic in the Tacoma Dome this week, from Thursday through Saturday.
Large school competitors, including those from Cheney, wrestle Thursday and Friday. Wrestlers from small schools compete Friday and Saturday only.
