Reardan faces Gorillas in semifinals

SPOKANE VALLEY - The top-ranked Reardan Screaming Eagles faced off against the No. 4-seeded Colfax Bulldogs in the WIAA 2B District 6 girls basketball tournament on Thursday, Feb. 13. The Screaming Eagles nipped the Bulldogs, 41-23, to make it to the semifinals.

It was a defensive start for both teams as the score remained close in the opening quarter. Colfax took a 5-2 lead before Reardan freshman Chasyn Waters made a wide-open field goal late to end the first quarter with the Screaming Eagles trailing the Bulldogs by one point.

The second quarter was a big defensive effort by Reardan, holding Colfax to just three points while the Screaming Eagles offense scored 13. After the Bulldogs hit a 3-pointer, the Screaming Eagles went on a 13-point run.

Reardan sophomore Olivia Wicks hit a field goal, tying the game at 8-8, before sophomore Rylynn Green sank a 3-pointer for the Screaming Eagles to take the lead. Waters gained two more field goals and notched an assist off a field goal by sophomore Emersen Sprecher before the end of the first half.

Halftime score: 17-8 Reardan.

The Screaming Eagles increased their advantage in the third by adding nine points and allowing five by the Bulldogs.

With 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Reardan senior Mackenzie Bjornberg made a traditional three-point play to increase her team's lead. Colfax managed to score on an inbound play with one second on the clock to end the third quarter with a 26-13 score in favor of Reardan.

Steadily increasing their lead, the Screaming Eagles went on a 11-6 run to start the final quarter. In the end, Reardan added 15 points and Colfax gained 10 in the final frame to give the Screaming Eagles the 41-23 victory.

Waters led the Screaming Eagles with 10 points, followed by Bjornberg and sophomore Tenice Waters with nine points each. Green added seven points for Reardan in the game.

Next up, the Screaming Eagles will take on the No. 3-ranked Davenport Gorillas in a semifinal matchup at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the West Valley High School Field House.
