A night to remember for the kids
DAVENPORT - Laughter, twinkling lights and nonstop dancing filled the auditorium at Davenport High School on Saturday, Feb. 22, as families gathered for the annual Itty Bitty Prom.
The event, themed "Starry Nights," provided a space for young children to dress up, run around with friends and enjoy a night of fun in a safe environment.
Unlike a traditional prom, Itty Bitty Prom allows kids to make the night their own, without the formality of a structured dance.
"We sold at least 80 tickets ahead of time, and there are at least 130 people here," said Colleen Hurt, fundraising chair for Growing Gorillas Preschool and a member of the PTO board. "Some parents weren't sure if they could make it because of sickness, but we had a great turnout."
The night featured snacks, water and a popular photo booth, which received positive feedback from parents and kids alike.
"It's a total family thing," Hurt said. "The kids get to chat with their friends, and watching them go crazy and dance is so stinking cute."
All proceeds from the event go directly to Growing Gorillas Preschool, funding teacher fees, supplies and room rentals.
The fundraiser is a collective effort from the PTO board, which consists of five members, along with parents who helped set up the night before.
"We just love how supportive the community is and how receptive and grateful the parents have been," Hurt said. "The little kids love it."
High school volunteers also assisted at the event, earning community service hours. Organizers hope to bring Itty Bitty Prom back again next year.
