Standout athlete dies in car crash

Celebration of Life to held Saturday

DAVENPORT — Brody J. Schillinger, a 19-year-old Davenport resident and standout athlete, died early Sunday, Feb. 23, in a rollover crash on U.S. Highway 2, about four miles west of the city.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, March 1, at noon in the Davenport High School Gymnasium at 801 7th Street. The graveside service is to follow at Mountainview Cemetery. A meal and gathering will take place after at the Davenport Memorial Hall at 511 Park Street.

According to the Washington State Patrol, Schillinger was eastbound around 1:30 a.m. when his 1983 Ford F-150 left the roadway, overturned and came to rest in the center of the highway.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol were involved, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

As of press time, funeral arrangements had not been announced.

In response to his death, a community raffle is being organized to support his family.

Proceeds will go directly to the Gustaveson family to help ease financial burdens. The raffle basket includes gift cards and items from several local businesses, including Cedar & Sage, Some Like it Hot, The Post & Office, The Parlor, 6th Street Pizza, The Mercantile, Sage Marketplace, The Peddler, Tans By LM, Roosters Coffee, Harrington Haus, Tribune Provisions, B-Fit, Mud Studio, Carolyn’s Cupcakery etc., Kysar Mechanical, and Timberline Service.

Wheatland Bank has also set up the “Brody Schillinger Donation Account” for those wishing to contribute directly. Donations can be made at any branch, with funds going directly to the family.

Schillinger, a 2024 graduate of Davenport High School, was a standout wrestler and football player.

Last year, he placed fifth place in the state championship Mat Classic wrestling tournament in the 185-pound division.

He wrestled for many years at 165lbs.

His death Sunday came just hours after his former teammates and little brother Brock Gustaveson won his back-to-back championship title in the 190lb division at this year’s state tournament.

Schillinger participated in many other school sports, including football.
