Gustaveson defends state wrestling title

Local boy leads Gorillas in state Mat Classic

DAVENPORT – Brock Gustaveson capped off an exceptional season Saturday, Feb. 22, securing his second consecutive 1B/2B state title at 190 pounds with a technical fall victory.

The Davenport junior, who was the defending champion at the weight class, remains the school's first and only state wrestling champion.

Alongside teammate Malachi Hoff, Gustaveson also became one of the only two wrestlers in school history to achieve 50 wins in a single season.

Among those victories were dominant performances against top competition across multiple divisions, including the 4A state champion and runner-up at 190 pounds, the 2A state champion at 215 pounds, and both the 1B/2B champion and runner-up at 215 pounds.

He also defeated his finals opponent four times throughout the season, either by pin or technical fall.

"I believe that 'hit list' has to be as impressive as any kid in the state, regardless of weight class or division," Davenport head coach Jesse Hoff said. "We wrestle a tough schedule, and Brock goes out of his way to find the best competition he can."

Gustaveson's leadership extended beyond his individual achievements.

As a team captain, he helped guide all nine of Davenport's wrestlers through the district tournament, with each qualifying for the state tournament and securing at least one victory.

The team accomplished this feat without a single senior on the roster.

That leadership, Hoff said, is what defines Gustaveson as much as his success on the mat.
