100 years ago

The City of Davenport will be filling the holes on Morgan St. with decomposed granite from Inkster Lake mixed with calcium chloride. The rest of the streets in town were graded last week.

320 acres of wheat land 8 miles north of Reardan was recently purchased for $18,350. Thomas Landreth bought the land including a house and barn from Oscar Carstens.

The Great Northern Railway paid $98,222 in property taxes to Lincoln County last week. The company pays a total of $1,793,000 to counties in Washington State.

75 years ago

Seed from the sky rained down on the Brommer brothers farm just east of Reardan last week when clover was seeded by airplane. The seeding was done by the Tonora Aviation company of Davenport.

Wolf Motor Company of Odessa was awarded a bid by the county commissioners to furnish a dump truck for District No. 1. The bid included the trade in of a dump truck for $1500 making the net bid $4,214.

Work has begun on the new Odessa grade school. Trees have been removed and excavation for the footings has been done. Once the school year is over the building will be demolished to be replaced at the same site.

8 varsity baseball players will be returning to the Odessa team this season and 7 others have joined the team. There are 21 games on the schedule according to Coach Carl Ryan.

The Davenport Planning Commission is studying off-street parking requirements for residential areas. The group decided to consult with the regional state planner for recommendations.

Reardan Boys Basketball took 6th place in the recent State Tournament. After beating out LaConner 56-43, they took on Brewster in the semi-final round, and after having the lead for most of the game, ended up losing by 4.

Spring field work has started in the Odessa area. The soil is still a little wet but workable. Some will be out seeding while those who planted winter wheat will be fertilizing.

The Davenport Booster Club auction held recently was attended by approximately 150 people and the event raised nearly $13,500 to support athletic activities in Davenport.

Reardan’s school levy is almost passing. It’s currently too close to call until all mail-in ballots are received. The $730,000 replacement levy is for maintenance and operations for 2 years.

A 2 year old boy was the victim of an attempted abduction in Sprague. The child’s siblings and two other teens were able to make enough of a commotion that the 15 year old Sprague boy released the toddler and he was arrested after an investigation.

Davenport High school gymnasium recently held the Little Guys Wrestling tournament. An estimated 400 wrestlers attended the event which was about 200 more than organizers were expecting.

Rehabilitation continues on the Harrington Opera House. Walls have been painted and plastered and wooden doors and trim have been painstakingly refinished. A schedule of events for the year has been released as well.
