100 years ago

Cleo Van Skiver, Bluestem area farmer, narrowly escaped death when an automobile he was driving was struck by a Northern Pacific train at the rail crossing in Davenport. Mr. Van Skiver was thrown onto the plow on the front of the train. With a cut on his head and a badly bruised foot, Mr. Van Skiver faired better than the car he was driving.

Garages at Ritzville have published for distribution a map of that city, showing all highways leading to other communities.

Four new homes were included in building permits grnted by the Odessa city council. Permits were issued to Clarence Kissler, Paul Schafer, Fred Miller and Gottleib Hemmerling.

During last week’s cattle auction about 175 head of stock cows were purchased. 7 train car loads are headed to Great Falls Montana and 100 head will be trucked over to the coast.

The Reardan school board accepted the resignation of Howard Manke at their last meeting. Manke has served in the grade school for 6 years. He is leaving to go into farming.

An estimated 40 young people from Odessa were recently arrested at a kegger in Grant County. Deputy Rick Thompson told the city council that law enforcement needs the backing of the parents in the community.

At a recent public meeting restoration of the old town hall was the topic of discussion. Grants were a topic of consideration as well as whether or not to restore the second floor and possible uses for the latter were discussed.

Davenport school district will be putting a $3.5 million bond in front of voter’s in May. If approved the increase to tax payers would be 67 cents per $1000 of assessed value. This is a 20 year general bond.

Lincoln County Relay for Life will kick off March 25 with sign-ups at the courthouse and the event will be at the Davenport Track on June 12 and 13 starting with the survivors walk.

After inspections by the EPA and Department of Ecology, the DOE is insisting that an immediate clean up of toxic and caustic chemicals take place. Determining the cost and who is responsible for paying for the clean up is still a matter in question.
