Trial set in infant death

DAVENPORT – A local man accused in the death of a 5-month-old boy appeared in Lincoln County Superior Court, where attorneys scheduled a trial date for late September.

Jordan Russell Mills-Jay, 30, is facing charges of first-degree manslaughter and second-degree murder in connection with the June 21, 2023, death of an infant referred to as “Zander.”

The trial is set to begin on Sept. 24, with a readiness hearing scheduled for Sept. 2.

During a court hearing, Mills-Jay agreed to waive his right to a speedy trial temporarily. His attorney, Brooke Hagara, stated that the trial is expected to last three days.

Prosecutor Dave Herring suggested scheduling the trial for late September, with readiness proceedings in early August.

A visiting judge presided over the court hearing via Zoom.

Mills-Jay was arrested on June 26, 2023, after Zander died at a Spokane hospital. Authorities said the child was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital on June 5 after emergency responders received a report of child abuse at a residence on Euclid Road.

Medical records indicated the child had suffered a subdural hemorrhage, bruising, and abusive head trauma injuries.

Dr. Kari Jones of Sacred Heart Medical Center determined that Zander’s injuries were consistent with significant force.

Court records state that Mills-Jay allegedly dropped the child from a height of 12 to 18 inches, resulting in fatal injuries.

If convicted, Mills-Jay could face life in prison and a fine of up to $50,000, along with restitution and other court assessments.
